How could We Prepare our Children for a Resource-Constrained Future?
Resilience Bootcamp | Hanoi | 2024
The Resilience Bootcamp in Hanoi, Vietnam (June 1-2, 2024), brought together children aged 10-15 for a transformative experience centered on sustainability and collaboration with local businesses. This hands-on program, led by members of The Learning Space, is the next chapter following the success of our March Innovation Bootcamp.
And one more time, it's all led by kids, as usual :)
This bootcamp was delivered and led by a 13-years-old kid who was pushed to be the Leader, facilitating and influencing the peers, the teachers and the parents as well!
The Theme: RESILIENCE BOOTCAMP
The fast-paced growth of our world is using up resources quicker than they can replenish, posing significant challenges for future generations.
Our children will inherit a world where resource scarcity demands strategic resource allocation and responsible waste management. Therefore, future skills emphasize sustainability as a cornerstone competency, acknowledging the formidable challenges our children will face in a resource-constrained future. Understanding sustainability entails recognizing the impacts of our actions on the environment, society and business world. By cultivating sustainability, children embrace their responsibility to mitigate these impacts and create positive change. It's about taking ownership of their actions, making informed choices, and actively contributing to a more sustainable and equitable world for present and future generations.
This program builds upon the success of our "Innovation Bootcamp" in Hanoi, where children gained valuable future skills and experienced dynamic learning environments. Acknowledging the necessity for a mindset shift towards responsible & wise decision-making for the future, we aim to underscore the significance of this shift for both children and parents. We envision the camp as a transformative journey, fostering a community of learners who will explore and grow together beyond the camp's duration.
For the first time ever, everyone who registered on our form showed up and joined Day 1—a milestone for us. Remarkably, 80% of participants returned for Day 2.
Here’s what stood out:
Almost 20 business interviews were conducted by a 13-years-old kid within a week in preparation for the bootcamp
6 teachers actively participated, alongside 7 parents who accompanied their children.
4 teams were formed, fostering collaboration and teamwork.
A rebellious teenager surprised everyone by asking her mom to stay for the evening online session—a request her mom said had never happened before. This indicates we’re on the right track, but the real challenge lies in sustaining their engagement and curiosity.
Another standout moment was an 8-year-old grasping the concept of sustainability, confidently standing up to represent her group. Moments like these reaffirm that our micro-learning approach is making an impact
We’ve made a strong progress, but the journey of growth and discovery has just begun!
WHAT DID WE DO ACTUALLY?!
During the bootcamp, children participate in activities related to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They work in teams and are evaluated on their knowledge of the SDGs, problem identification skills, articulation, teamwork, and resilience.
Here are some examples of activities that took place during the bootcamp:
● Children were asked to identify problems related to SDGs and brainstorm solutions. For example, one activity focused on a cafe where a broken air conditioner was leaking water
● Participants interviewed guest speakers from local businesses, including Green Gem Shop and AI Academy, and created mind maps based on the interviews.
● They also worked on developing business maps and identifying problems and solutions related to various companies.
The children's performance in these activities was assessed by facilitators and feedback was provided to help them improve their skills. For instance, feedback often included suggestions for improving communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities…
